HIPHOPREC.com ha avuto l'onore di intervistare Torae, rapper di Coney Island con all'attivo 2 album ufficiali, l'ultimo dei quali è For The Records, pubblicato l'8 Novembre 2011.

Nel corso della sua carriera iniziata nel 1996 Torae ha collaborato con artisti del calibro di Dj Premier, Marco Polo, Skyzoo, Sean Price, Talib Kweli, Black Milk, Wale e molti altri.

Torae è attualmente nel roster di artisti della label newyorkese Duck Down Music.

In questo periodo Torae avrebbe dovuto partecipare a 5 date del tour Per La Mia Gente / For My People di Marco Polo, Bassi Maestro e Ghemon, ma a causa degli ingenti danni causati a New York dall'uragano Sandy non gli è stato possibile partire.

1. Raccontaci qualcosa di Torae e del suo disco “For the Record” che ti ha portato in giro per il mondo.

Tell us something about Torae and "For the Record" that brought you all over the world.

Torae è solo un Mc di Brooklyn, NY che ama l’hip-hop e che ha avuto la fortuna di poter vivere a pieno l’opportunità e il sogno di fare musica. Ah, non sono un granché a preparare la colazione.

Torae is just a hip-hop loving MC from Brooklyn, NY. That's been blessed enough to get an opportunity to live out this dream of making music. Oh & I make a mean breakfast dish!

2. Sei originario di Coney Island, pensi che il suo background culturale abbia in qualche modo influenzato la tua attività e il tuo modo di fare musica?

You come from Coney Island, do you think its cultural background might have somehow influenced your activity and your way of making music?

Si, penso che venire da Coney Island abbia senza dubbio influenzato il mio modo di fare musica. Scrivo delle mie realtà, delle mie esperienze e di ciò che mi circonda. Coney Island è gran parte di ciò che sono.

Yea, I think being from Coney Island definitely influenced my way of making music. I write from my realities, experiences & surroundings. Coney Island is a big part of who I am.

3. Puoi dirci qualcuno con cui ti piacerebbe lavorare (sia produttori che Mcs)?

Can you name someone you would like to work with (producers or Mcs)?

Certo, direi Just Blaze, Kanye, Erick Sermon. Tra gli Mcs scelgo Mos Def, Talib Kweli e Ghostface, solo per dirne alcuni.

4. Tutti i pezzi in cui hai collaborato con Dj Premier sono estremamente fighi, avete qualcosa di nuovo in cantiere?

All the tracks you've released collaborating with Dj Premier are extremely dope, are you dropping something new?

Dopo aver fatto 3 vere e proprie bombe con Preem, ora sto cercando di evolvere e di continuare a crescere come artista. In ogni caso Preem è uno di quelli che vorrei sempre avere al mio fianco in quello che faccio.

After doing 3 joints with Preem, I'm looking to expand & keep growing as an artist. I always want to keep Preem in the mix of what I'm doing though.

5. Descrivici in 3 parole la “Duck Down Records” e raccontaci come ci si sente a farne parte.

Leggendaria, Appassionante, Hip-Hop! E’ fantastico fare parte di qualcosa di così storico. Sean Price, Buckshot, Rock e Smif N Wessun sono incredibili.

6. Il tuo Lp “Double Barrel” assieme a Marco Polo ha ottenuto grande considerazione. Marco Polo ha di recente rilasciato un Ep in collaborazione con Ghemon e Bassi Maestro, due dei principali e dei più conosciuti rappers della scena italiana. Nella traccia “Get Live!” troviamo anche il tuo featuring, raccontaci qualcosa su questa esperienza italiana e sulla tua amicizia con Marco Polo.

Your collaborative LP "Double Barrel" with Marco Polo is of high repute. Marco Polo is now releasing a collaborative EP with Ghemon and Bassi Maestro, two of the main and most known rappers of the italian scene. We find also Torae in the track "Get Live!", tell us something about this italian experience and your friendship with Marco Polo.

Ho incontrato Ghemon quando ero in Italia l’anno scorso e mi ha detto che stava già lavorando con Marco, quando mi hanno chiesto di far parte del progetto ne son stato completamente catturato. Marco è un grande amico ed un producer sensazionale, se lui sta lavorando a qualcosa sicuramente è qualcosa di cui voglio far parte.

I met Ghemon when I was in Italy last year. He told me he was working with Marco, so when they asked me to be part of the project I was totally down to do it. Marco is my good friend & a dope producer so I know if he's working on something it's something I want to be part of.

7. Puoi dirci il titolo di una canzone che ti ha fatto dire: “Caaazzo, amo l’hip-hop”?

Could you tell us a song that made you say: "Daaamn, I love Hip-Hop"?

T.R.O.Y di Pete Rock & CL Smooth è uno di quei momenti in cui mi fermo e dico: cazzo io aaaaamo l’hip-hop.

Did you see "The Art of Rap"?

Non ancora, ma lo farò di sicuro in futuro.

Not as of yet, I look forward to checking it out though.

9. Qual’è la tua posizione nei confronti della “lotta artistica” tra old school e le new generations?

What is your position about the "artistic fight" between old school and new generations?

C’è una lotta? Quando? Al Madison Square o al Barclays? Voglio andarci!
